During the past few years, Ive become more interested in the subject of health and wellness. During this time, Ive found the amount of information and variety of supplements overwhelming. The rows of jars and bottles that line the shelves at health food stores and supermarkets seems infinite.
I believe that its essential ,in our pill popping society, to be judicious when choosing to start a new supplement routine. Its imperative to do research and speak to your doctor or health practitioner before making a final decision.
Every individual needs to assess their own needs and restrictions before choosing a supplement. Personally, Im in my early 30s,increasing my exercise levels, and dealing with a bit of mood irregularities and depression. I was already taking a multi-vitamin, but looked into two supplements that I had heard a lot about but had never tried: Evening Primrose Oil and Co-Enzyme Q-10.
Co-Enzyme Q-10 or vitamin Q10, is sometimes referred to as the fountain of youth. It was identified in the 1950s and occurs naturally in the body. It protects the body from free radicals, which are nasty chemical elements that can damage the bodys cells. Co-enzyme Q-10 is considered an anti-oxidant that has been prescribed to help treat and prevent various forms of cancer. Found in varying levels in different body organs, the heart happens to have high concentrations of Q10. A deficiency of this energy nutrient can lead to hypertension, angina, and fatigue. It has been shown to increase stamina in athletes, and keeps the cells of the body in good working order.
As a bonus there is also evidence to suggest Co-enzyme Q-10 can help to prevent gum disease. I look at this supplement as an oil change for my body. It helps with regular maintenance and keeps me high energy. My sister is a chiropractor and this was the one supplement she highly recommended. A recommended dose for daily maintenance is 30 mg, three times per day. Keep in mind that Co-Enzyme Q-10 is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Ive recently learned about and started using another supplement called Evening Primrose Oil. This supplement is ideal for women and can help with the symptoms of PMS, ease arthritic joint pain and swelling, prevent diabetes, help skin conditions like acne, rosacea, and exzema, protect against the effects of aging, counter female infertility, and nourish nails, scalp and hair. Evening Primrose Oil is pressed from the seed of the Evening Primrose flower. It it chock full of the fatty acid GLA or gamma-linoleic acid which exerts anti-inflammatory and other healing actions.
Our own bodies produce GLA which aids in prostoglandin production. Prostoglandins are required for proper cell function and rejuvenation, but need to be restored regularly. Everyday stresses on the body such as aging, high cholesterol, alcohol use, poor diet can lead to a deficiency in prostoglandin, and it has been shown that good GLA levels can help the production of this hormone. Usually 3 doses of 1000mg per day is recommended, but check with your doctor or health practitioner.

In the following article we will attempt to shed some light into these questions and give you all the information you need to make an informed choice. Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Do they belong in natural skin care products? What are they? How are they useful to our skin? Are they a natural ingredient in skin care? Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) are Fruit acids, which are weak organic acids derived from various sources such as, grapes, apples, sugar cane, maple, pineapple, papaya, willow bark, lemon, lime, sour milk, blackberries, yoghurt and cider, and play an important role in skin care. Fruit acids are natural exfoliants that perform a number of functions at the level of the stratum corneum on the skins surface: Loosen and dissolve dead cells from the skin’s surface Help to regenerate new skin cells, Aid in the control of acne, smooth rough dry skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged and aging skin and Retain moisture, which leaves your skin healthy and vibrant. Naturally contained AHA’s are basically a good thing, unfortunately, many companies are using concentrated extracts, or worse still, synthetically manufactured AHA’s or BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids), and that is not a good thing. When scientists comes across a ‘new substance’, so to speak, they have a tendency to want to make it better than nature’s version… more concentrated for quicker results… and so on. Unfortunately, this usually brings with it side effects and sometimes actual physical damage. A natural ingredient just what exactly does that mean? Does it mean it is a substance that nature created and it has been added to a product in order to make that product natural? No, a natural ingredient is an ingredient that is, where ever possible, present in it’s natural form, for example AHA’s can be extracted and then added to a product, thereby the maker of that product can claim it contains ‘Natural ingredients’. Or the AHA’s can be use in a product in the form of an extract of Papaya with all the other ingredients present in Papaya fruit. This is a more balanced set of ingredients that work together (synergistically) to achieve a desired effect, thus it is a truly natural ingredient. Let me give you an example: Aspirin (a very commonly used pain killer) is derived from the bark of the white Willow tree. The substance or the active ingredient is called Salicylic acid, a BHA. This is the stuff that reduces pain. It is also the stuff that can cause Stomach ulcers…. Now, the herbal extract of the white Willow bark does not (or is much less likely to) cause Stomach ulcers. Why? Because the herbal extract contains many other ingredients that are contained in the bark, which the extraction process brings out. Some of these substances are mucilaginous (Porridge is mucilaginous) which means they are slippery and when taken internally, they cover the membrane of the Stomach (the lining) and prevent the salicylic acid from causing irritation or ulceration clever, isn’t she, that Mother Nature woman? Sometimes you will hear these additional ingredients referred to as “phyto-chemicals”. This is very current topic today with respect to Vitamins and other ‘natural’ supplements. What does all this have to do with natural skin care? Well, as I have written before. Natural skin care is not necessarily natural and one could debate back and forth what ‘natural’ is, or what it should be. One thing is certain, natural skin care products should not contain any ‘un-natural’ ingredients, be they synthetically produced or in ‘purified / isolated form’. Natural should be as close as possible to the way it is found in nature. That is not to say one should not use Vitamin E as a principal ingredient in a cream, but it should not be of a synthetically derived form. Wheat germ oil, for example, is very high in Vitamin E and contains many other phyto-chemicals, which are nourishing to the skin. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the name given to a very complex condition in which a woman will have ovaries that are enlarged by many small, underdeveloped egg follicles, along with a pattern of other symptoms that rare caused by imbalances in reproductive and other hormones.
Symptoms of PCOS will vary but commonly include some combination of: Multiple, small, painless cysts that enlarge the ovaries Irregular or absent menstrual cycle Infertility Obesity or the inability to lose weight; persistent abdominal fat Hirsutism, which is excessive body or facial hair, thin scalp hair and/or acne Blood sugar abnormalities, usually hypoglycemia,or low blood sugar, and eventually high blood sugar Insulin resistance, and eventually diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

As this list suggests, PCOS is not simply a disorder of your ovaries alone. It is a body-wide disorder. It affects you physically and emotionally. EFAs are transformed by the body into hormone-like messengers called eicosanoids, which control many functions in all your tissues. Eicosanoids regulate the powerful impact insulin has on your reproductive hormones; they determine your level of cardiovascular risk and how likely you are to develop diabetes.
Remove Junk Food from your Diet. Junk foods are loaded with calories and no real nutrition. Refined foods make us overfed and undernourished. Junk foods are the problem, not protein or fat.
Exercise must be daily. Lifelong. Its what we were designed for, to be muscularly strong and active on a daily basis for our survival. How to remove blackheads, what causes them, and if they can be prevented is what everyone wants to know. Remove them from our skin, and keep them from ever coming back. These ugly little acne black dots can be easily removed, and be prevented from future outbreaks.
Another name for those ugly blackheads is comedones. These ugly black dots on our face can be quite embarrassing. Its known that they are made of oil, dead skin, or other things that clog our pores. They are ugly to have, and sometimes seem to be a never-ending acne problem.
Some people believed at one time that hygiene causes the issue we have with blackheads, but it is now known that, that is not the case. Its always important to consult a doctor when trying medications on your skin. A doctor may want to prescribe a topical or oral medication to fight the acne. Most people dont need antibiotics for blackheads but they can be used at times. Your doctor may prescribe a zinc or retinoid.
How to remove blackheads with over the counter products? You dont want to damage your skin by squeezing them out and removing them in that fashion. There are so many different over the counter products to choose from, so learning and understanding what each one is for can help you choose which one you may need.
Most common ingredients you may look for is benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, resorcinol, or sulphur. Each product is used in different ways. They can help you remove the blackheads, as well as with consistent use, help to prevent future blackheads.
Resorcinol combined with Sulphar can cause the top layer of your skin to peal keeping your skin free of agents that clog your pores. This will help to remove blackheads. Then you will want to use Benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is safe and effective to use after the acne is cleared up.
It will keep the skin free from bacteria. Use consistently but not daily as it can dry out your skin. Benzoyl peroxide is the most versatile over the counter product, and can be found in cleansing bars, liquids, lotions, or gels that are then applied directly onto your skin.

Who doesnt want to be healthy? Ive been fascinated with health ever since I can remember. My grandmothers best friend was bedridden with rheumatoid arthritis since she was in her early thirties. My own mother had chronic mental and physical illnesses (some would call it hypochondria). Seeing these people suffer set me on my path as a healer.
In my family, it was not an easy thing to be interested in good health. Believe it or not, being interested in health opened me to ridicule. Adele Davis, a pioneer in the health food community, was just beginning to write books like, ???Lets Eat Right to Keep Fit??. My father called her a ???health food nut?? and downed another piece of rare roast beef, two martinis, French fries and a Caesar salad, chased with a chain of PallMalls
My grandparents lived past 95 in excellent health. My parents died at 58 and 60. They cut more than 35 years off those wonderful genes with their lifestyle.
These are the principles I advocate for a lifetime of good health.
1.Its your health.
2.Your physical health and your mental health are the same thing.
3.Be yourself.
Let me explain each one with some examples.
#1 Its your health.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is your health. Its not the doctors health or the governments health. Its your health and its your responsibility to keep yourself healthy.

If, by the time youre 30, you dont understand your own body and what makes it work, there is no power on earth that can save you from yourself.

???You can make changes in the physical world, such as leaving an abusive spouse and your mental and physical health will improve.
???The easiest and fundamental connection between the mind (mental health) and body (physical health) is the breath. When we breath consciously, no negative emotion can be present. Simple but profound, this is one of the great secrets of meditation.
#3 Be yourself.
Trying to be something youre not is life-threatening. Most people will interpret the statement ???trying to be something youre not?? negatively. What we mean is, trying to be a different type of person than you naturally are.
???Type?? is defined according to the popular concepts of typing personality that we find in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(r) or in Keirsey Temperament Theory. If you wonder what your ???type?? is, visit www.keirsey.com for a free self test.
Here are some examples from real life.
???If you love solitude and the great outdoors, dont get yourself stationed on a submarine.
???If you love confrontation, competition and running the show dont be a teacher or case worker.

Why do we try to be something we arent? It happens in a context of trying to please others ?? parents, teachers, religious leaders, spouses.

I have clients with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, insomnia, cancer, tumors, esophagitis, migraines, bleeding ulcers, chronic diarrhea, obesity, manic-depressive disorders, deep scarring acne, strokes, apnia, and drinking problems who still will not consider making a lifestyle change.
Could these people be healed? Yes, certainly. When they begin to shift over into who they really are, the symptoms will disappear, sometimes dramatically.
