Bodily changes are considered normal if they make the body organs function more efficiently. When these changes happen with pain and certain abnormalities which can cause harm than any good, they might be symptoms of a certain illness. If you observe that you have irregular or no menstrual periods for several months now, your hair excessively grows, or your cholesterol rises although you take a balanced diet, you might be experiencing an abnormality which is highly related to how your ovary functions.
When you have experienced these symptoms, its possible that you have the PCOS syndrome. PCOS syndrome (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a hormonal deficiency in women which is demonstrated by different symptoms such as the mentioned ones. The other symptoms include acne, obesity, infertility, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
You cannot find some medical explanation for the causes of PCOS. It has been observed that women with this syndrome often have relatives like a mother or sister who experience the same syndrome. But it is not scientifically proven that this syndrome is hereditary. Another suspected cause is the presence of tiny cysts found in the ovary but there are also women who have cysts but dont really have the PCOS. An abnormality in the production of insulin is observed to be most common in women with this type of syndrome, but this is only a result of excessive production of androgen hormone to the body.
PCOS Syndrome is often diagnosed by doctors after having seen the above mentioned symptoms. Since the symptoms are signs of other diseases, physicians usually advise patients to undergo physical examination that makes use of ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Ultra sound is advised for women since it does not employ radiation making it safe for women whether they are pregnant or not. The MRI and CT Scan are the costly yet efficient medical procedures. CT Scan however can be hazardous to your health since it makes use of x-rays and injected dyes..
This syndrome however can be treated. The treatments vary according to the age of women. Birth control pills are prescribed for women who like to have birth control while those who dont are given treatments to normalize their menstrual cycles. For women suffering from infertility, a substance called clomiphene is prescribed in order to trigger ovulation. When these treatment methods dont result positively, ovarian drilling may be required to stop the symptoms of this said syndrome.
